What are dental implants?

Dental implants are artificial tooth roots, usually made of titanium, that are surgically placed into the jawbone to support replacement teeth like crowns, bridges, or dentures.

What does a dental implant do?

  • Replace missing teeth
  • Restore chewing ability and speech
  • Improve the appearance of your smile
  • Help maintain jawbone health by stimulating bone growth

What is the dental implant procedure?

The dental implant procedure typically involves several steps:

  1. Initial Evaluation: Includes dental exams and imaging
  2. Implant Placement: A small post is surgically inserted into the jawbone
  3. Healing Phase: The bone fuses with the implant in a process called osseointegration, which can take several months
  4. Abutment Placement: A connector is attached to the implant
  5. Final Restoration: A crown, bridge, or denture is placed on top

Benefits of Dental Implants

  • Long-lasting: With proper care, dental implants can last a lifetime
  • Stable and secure: Unlike dentures, they don’t slip or shift
  • Preserve jawbone: Prevent bone loss that often occurs with missing teeth
  • No impact on neighboring teeth: Unlike bridges, implants don’t require altering adjacent teeth

What is Dental Sleep Apnea Treatment (Sleep Dentistry)?

Dental sleep apnea treatment (sleep dentistry) is a non-surgical approach to managing obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) using custom-made oral appliances. These devices help keep the airway open during sleep by adjusting the position of the jaw or tongue.

Who Can Benefit from Sleep Dentistry?

This treatment is ideal for:

  • People diagnosed with mild to moderate obstructive sleep apnea
  • Those who cannot tolerate a CPAP machine
  • Individuals who snore heavily
  • Patients looking for a less invasive alternative to surgery

The Sleep Dentistry Treatment Process

  1. Diagnosis: A sleep study confirms the presence and severity of sleep apnea
  2. Referral: A referral from your primary care provider (PCP) or pulmonologist with a diagnosis of Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA)
  3. Dental Evaluation: A dentist trained in sleep medicine assesses your oral and airway structure
  4. Custom Appliance Creation: A mandibular advancement device (MAD) is custom made for your mouth
  5. Fitting and Adjustment: The appliance is fitted and adjusted for comfort and effectiveness
  6. Post Treatment Sleep Study: A follow up study is completed to ensure the mandibular advancement device (MAD) is in the best position for improvement of obstructive sleep apnea (OSA).
  7. Follow-up Visits: Regular visits ensure the device continues to work well and symptoms improve.

Benefits of Sleep Dentistry Treatment

  • Improves breathing and sleep quality
  • Reduces snoring and daytime fatigue
  • Comfortable and easy to use
  • Portable and quiet (unlike CPAP machines)
  • Non-invasive and reversible
